How to Use:

This 9-week program will provide step-by-step poetry-building lessons for K-2 students. A wonderful first-introduction to writing poetry, this program is designed to be engaging and simple to implement in a home school or classroom setting.

Weekly Guide: For each week, a simple teaching guide outlines a suggested weekly format. This includes weekly goals, verbal reminders, additional materials list, and a 4-day teaching outline. Weekly goals give you a quick glance at what is being taught each week. Verbal reminders are quick to help to provide teaching tips you can give to students as they work through the week. The additional items list tells which of the charts are needed and any extra materials required. Finally, a suggested outline maps out a 4-day teaching week for simple 5-10 minute lessons. These are not required but will provide students with a greater understanding of the weekly topics.

Teaching Charts: We suggest printing these charts on card stock for durability as they can be used for years to come. Hang charts in the classroom, in a freestanding plastic sign holder, or store in page protectors inside a three-ring binder.

Weekly Worksheets: Following the short lessons, students will complete one worksheet each day to practice their new skills. These worksheets include simple reminders and a place to build your poem.

Poetry landed right at the beginning of distance learning for my students, this pack helped plan simple poetry lessons/activities that the kids could grasp without having the immediate in person support from their teacher. I added supplementary videos from youtube to go along with them.

I used this unit for my sub while on maternity leave, and she commented on how easy it was to follow and how engaged the students were while writing their poetry. It was so nice to have the lessons scripted for her ahead of time making my prep a lot less demanding.

We had a lot of fun working through these units. I liked the variety. My kids had a good time being creative with their writing, and I liked the emphasis on brainstorming and editing, as well as publishing a finished product.
